Up until now Mayfly nymphs have been tied on longshank hooks, as successful as these have been, they lack the mobility of the real thing, The ‘Wiggle Nymph’ of the 70’s - a US idea – back then, caught my attention, and has led me on a quest, experimenting with the idea on this long bodied copy of the natural. The term ‘wiggle’ convinced many a fly tier that the so constructed nymph would behave like a mini pike plug – it doesn’t. But what it does quite effectively is move its abdomen at the whim of the current. Also, and just as important, when a trout strikes it doesn’t hit a long stiff object, this pattern collapses making it a far better hooker. I have also incorporated several other ‘triggers’ found on the natural:- the obvious soft dorsal gills, the ‘danica’ markings and three pairs of legs, soft enough to sit underneath when the artificial is ‘worked’.
